Madam Opera's Estimable Marine Society for Foundling Boys and Girls, more commonly known as Madam Opera's, was a marine society in Boschenberg that was founded and operated by Opera Gelderwine. It was where a baby Rossamünd Bookchild was left by Cinnamon and was his home until he left to become a lamplighter. Gosling Corvinius Arbour was also raised here until he ran away, later burning down Madam Opera's.

The marine society was founded after Opera Gelderwine returned home from a Grand Tour abroad of several years. When she returned she found that that all that was left to her was an old mansion on the Vlinderstrat between a tannery and a rat-infested warehouse. This mansion had been in her family for generations, so many in fact that Rossamünd Bookchild had fallen asleep when he had heard the list of generations once read aloud. It was a tall and narrow building of dark, decaying wood and dark stones and sagged under the weight of the many additions.[1]

Despite this, Madam Opera had spent most of her money on the Grand Tour, had no other means of generating an income, and refused to take other suitors, although she had several. She thus became the first unmarried woman to run a marine society by accepting a navy contract to do so. Instructors at the foundlingery were primarily former vinegaroons who were paid by the navy, although some of them were also bargemen. In addition to the benefits of this cost saving measure, the practical experience of life on the vinegar seas helped instill in the foundlings the aspirations of serving in the navy. In addition to the navy, the army, various trades, and other government agencies recruited from the foundlings during the hiring season.
