The Vadé Chemica (pronounced "vay-dah kem-i-kah") is an ancient book about habilistics with a focus on the making of scripts. Its authors are unknown, but were from a now-lost race, possibly the Skylds, who possessed such advanced technologies and knowledge that despite the Vadé Chemica's age it is still regarded as an authoritative work, but is largely incomprehensible to most of its readers.

Outside of the Haacobin Empire where it is proscribed due to the belief that it contains forbidden and destructive information, the Vadé Chemica is held in high regard and is one of the materials studied by would-be skolds. The rhombus in Wörms contains over a dozen copies which are studied by apprentice skolds the entire time that they train for three years. Although it is illegal to possess a copy of the book within the empire, many people nonetheless have secret copies of excerpts from it, including a small series of seven volumes titled the Seven Nephthandous Tomes. Excerpts of it may also be found in expurgatories.

One of the theories put forward by the Vadé Chemica is that monsters arise from slime and mud made fertile by threwd and the sun, a process referred to as abinition.

Trivia[]
